Noboru Takeshita

Served as Japan's 74th prime minister from November 1987 to June 1989 and played a key role in the implementation of the consumption tax in April 1989. Takeshita was forced to step down as prime minister to take responsibility for the Recruit stock-for-favors scandal implicating politicians, senior government officials and businessmen. Born Feb. 26, 1924, died June 19, 2000.

UTSUNOMIYA, Japan - The Utsunomiya District Court sentenced Kazuo Shinozawa (photo) to death on March 19 for murdering six female employees at a Tsutsumi Jewelry Co. shop in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, on June 11, 2000 by setting fire to the store and stealing jewels worth 140 million yen.

The Imperial Household Agency and the Environment Ministry said June 19 that they will permanently open to the public nearly half of the 1,200-hectare estate, possibly beginning in fiscal 2011, in response to Emperor Akihito's suggestion that it be used as a place where people can have contact with nature.
